Proclamation Water Safety Awareness Month - Love, Carissa

Proclamation Water Safety Awareness Month

WHEREAS, Kansas is in the heartland of the United States of America and borders no oceans, or great lakes, we are often overlooked when it comes to water safety awareness.

WHEREAS, Drowning is the number 1 accidental cause of death in children. Drowning happens quickly and silently. During the year 2018, the United States had 2,077 drowning deaths, 697 of them were children, a preventable cause of death. Water safety awareness is key to avoid drowning; Love Carissa Corporation has worked very hard to implement programs and tools to the citizens of Horton and other surrounding towns in our great State of Kansas.

WHEREAS, the risk of drowning is increased by the lack of swimming ability, lack of barriers to prevent unsupervised water access, the lack of close supervision, location, distracted supervision by way of adults conversing or being distracted by phones, the failure to wear life jackets, and alcohol use; and

WHEREAS, water safety involves not just safe swimming and boating but also involves recognizing potential household hazards such as rain-filled buckets, flower pots in yards, toilets, bathtubs, and water coolers at gatherings and identifying potential hazards in your community such as retention ponds, canals, and neighboring pools; and

WHEREAS, collaboration among families and alliances among local, county, state agencies, first responders, faith-based, non-profit and business organizations promote effective water safety awareness programs; raising community awareness aids long-term prevention; and
WHEREAS, during the month of May, the City of Horton and families, along with the Love Carissa Corporation, will be engaging communities throughout to help educate the community about water safety.

NOW, THEREFORE, THE MAYOR FOR THE CITY OF HORTON AND BOARD OF CITY COMMISSIONERS OF HORTON, KANSAS, HEREBY PROCLAIMS: THE MONTH OF MAY 2019 AS “Water Safety Awareness Month”

AND ENCOURAGES ALL AMERICANS TO SUPPORT THESE ORGANIZATIONS AND THEIR EFFORTS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC CONCERNING WATER SAFETY.
